In pictures....Writing on the wall
Hmm, is it going to be easier to repaint this wall white, or black?

EVERY little helps, but when a big tin of black paint gets into idle hands, anything goes. One member of staff at the “new” Tesco Express in Bold Street put this latest grafitti, on the site of the Bold Street Produce Market, down to “Tesco haters”. Surely not.

The legend “Blame Tesco.” with a neat full stop, appeared on Monday morning, on the wall adjacent to the controversial piece of land which, until last week, the Christian family had plied their fruit and veg wares for decades. Full story here.

Regrettably, with the relatively recent closure of nearby Rapid, it could be a while before someone obtains a few litres of white paint to daub it away. It won't disappear easily. With the business due back on the site soon on barrows, city planners, in particular, might be reminded that some things are a bugger to get rid of.

I Yam What I Yam says..“ Hang on a tick! The fruit stall hadn't been there as long as the article would suggest. Among other shops Matta's used to sell fruit and veg until this place opened. Mrs. Christian's fruit barrow was on Lord Street.

Knowledgeable says..“ Matta's still does sell fruit and veg. The market has been there at least a decade. They have sold fruit and veg in the city centre for 125 years. Funny thing is this is becoming something of a tourist attraction now

Urbane Blight says..“ They were doing the Council a favour. The Council decided it wanted a few squares dotted randomly about and they aren’t bad things, but without a purpose they just become places where winos, beggars, skateboarders and other undesirables congregate.
By giving this space where useful shops once stood a role attracting people and keeping it busy and free of human detritus, Christians fruit market has been doing the Council a favour.
The Council’s secret police who go about victimising lone women in the city centre for dropping fag ends are too sissy to tackle the drunks, tramps and teenagers who will take over this space.

Anne Thracite says..“ Fireside World used to be there! You could feel the heat of the flame-effect fire through the window in winter!

Egg Sarnie says..“ What Bold Street really needs is more branches of Cousins and County Bakeshop.

R. S. McLelland says..“ And furriers!

I Yam What I Yam says..“ Oi Knowledgeable! Matta's does sell some fruit and veg but in the main it is 'exotics' peculiar to Indian, Chinese and West Indian cookery. They no longer sell mainstream veg, onions, spuds, carrots, etc., though perhaps they will again now.
Of course I can remember Matta's when they were on Granby Street. How 'knowledgeable' is that?

Joan says..“ Someone has painted over the Blame Tesco sign today - what a shame - it was making us all smile a bit! What Bold Street really needs is lots of support in these hard times - and hurry back Christians with your barrow - I'm missing you desperately!

Grape ape says..“ hear hear Joan. People must not let Bold Street wither on the vine

Vera Knickers says..“ I saw the old bloke with the beard in the Tesco's in Allerton the other day

Urbane Blight says..“ Not in the fruit and veg? He'd be ripped off in there!
