The Nifty 250: A sharp look at the news in so many words
Friday July 23: Government's outpost in Liverpool axed; More job losses at council; Venables back behind bars and firefighting motorbikes introduced

MORE than 60 jobs will be lost after the government announced it will close its outpost in Liverpool.
The decision to scrap Government Office North West offices in the Cunard Building is part of a move to slash 200 posts going across Liverpool and Manchester.

The news provoked outrage from council and union leaders.

LIVERPOOL City Council has offered voluntary redundancy to all staff earning annual salaries above £40,000 in an attempt to slash costs.
Letters have been sent out inviting managers to apply for the scheme as a "streamlining" measure.

Earlier this month the council offered compensation to 80 senior staff earning over £60,000.

Social workers and front line staff are not eligible, the council said, in order to preserve essential services.

JAMES Bulger's killer Jon Venables has been jailed for two years after he admitting downloading and distributing child pornography.
Venables stored images of children as young as two on his home computer and made online contact with a paedophile by posing as a 35-year-old mother.

The 27-year-old was recalled to prison after being caught with the images in February. He told police he was “breaking the last taboo”.

FIREFIGHTING motorbikes are to be deployed across Liverpool.
It is the first city in the UK to roll out two of the £30,000 bikes, which have pumps with a range of 11 metres, in a six-month pilot scheme.

The two riders will be kitted out with state-of-the-art equipment which allows them to start fighting blazes as soon as they arrive at a scene.
