Living in another whirl

THE hall was decked, the orchestra was baffled,  the tiaras were firmly fixed and the helmets, like many of the people, were pithed.

The first Ruritanian State Ball in 10 years took place in the Victoria Museum at Liverpool University on Saturday night.

You had to be there – for one thing the pictures don't really do this fast moving happening justice – for the polkas, the opening procession and the archbishop's blessing, for the marches and the strange magic.

Crown Prince Harpik's mad social whirl has been executed intermittently at a variety of grand venues in the past, including Liverpool Town Hall and St George's Hall.

This time the decorous Brownlow Hill gallery drew people of all ages from all over the country - even a party of mysterious dancing Spaniards.

This was a formal affair in appearance only. With complimentary vodka and schnapps from the Old Country, composure went out of the window at around ten past eight. Gown on one knee, you could say.

Same again? Well, the big question is will there be another.

Here's the gallery of the gallery.

Beer bottles on the tables? Civilians wearing their hats indoors? There's a chap there with his jacket off sitting in his shirtsleeves! Not like in my day!

Shirtsleeves were only permitted during the fighting of duels in the old days!

No class, obviously, Cunt Bernard. Looks like they needed a firm man on the door

In fairness to the chap in the shirt sleeves he had just been wrestling a tiger. Nonetheless proper decorum must be ahered to and he was obliged to shoot himself after the port.
